Watch: Naidu’s Presentation in English
In an interesting move, the successor state of Andhra Pradesh is going to have an exclusive happiness index (HI) department. AP CM Chandrababu Naidu, who started it as his pet scheme, is going to head the HI wing. Naidu will be the second CM in India to start HI department while Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan is credited as the first CM in the country to start an Happiness Index.
Earlier in March, speaking at a conference of Microsoft India, ‘Future Decoded’, Chandrababu Naidu had stated that he want to include happiness as index besides economic indicators. Naidu stated that his objective is to make Andhra Pradesh as the best destination in the world by 2050 by giving major preference to happiness besides economic indicators.
Keeping his word, Naidu has now started HI department and he has devised parameters for the Happiness Index (HI). He wants to see that each family in AP gets Rs 10,000 income and HI will be measured from data sourced from periodic surveys in the districts.
Already, AP government’s Vision-2029 document is inspired from Bhutan’s gross national happiness index (GNHI), encompassing 9 domains like psychological well-being, health, time use, education, cultural diversity and resilience, good governance, community vitality, ecological diversity and resilience, living standards.
In addition to the vision, Chandarbabu recently launched a campaign on “achieving happiness” in society. Upon his instructions, the urban civic bodies in AP’s districts started organising weekly dance and song jamborees under the ‘Happy Sunday’ programme.
It’s learnt that before focusing on Happiness Index, state government is now focusing on to achieve the target monthly income of Rs 10,000 for each family and coordinating with other departments in the government as Naidu opines that happiness wouldn’t be achieved without meeting the financial needs.
