An old footbridge collapsed in South Goa’s Curchorem town a little while ago, sending at least 30 people into the Sanvordem river below. While two people were reportedly found dead, nobody has been pulled alive from the river so far. The accident took place immediately after the gathering of around 50 people arrived at bridge to look for a man who committed suicide by jumping off the river few minutes ago.
While the rescue team and officials are not sure about how many people were on the bridge, the search operation for the people missing is currently on. So far, the bodies of two people who’re dead were pulled from the river. Reportedly, the Chief Minister of Goa Manohar Parrikar requested Indian Navy and Coast Guard divers for immediate aid in the rescue operation.
The footbridge named Portuguese-era Zuari, which was already under dilapidated state, collapsed suddenly, said the onlookers. Since the bridge was in an irreparable state, there was a huge demand from the locals to dismantle it.
